Simply Education is recruiting an enthusiastic and hands-on Outdoor Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN school in the Chard area.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with previous outdoor education experience who wants to use their skills to support children and young people with Special Educational Needs.

This is not a traditional classroom-based Teaching Assistant role. You'll spend a significant amount of time supporting pupils through outdoor learning, physical activities, practical sessions and enrichment opportunities, helping young people develop confidence, resilience, independence and positive relationships.

The Role

Working alongside teachers and support staff, you'll use outdoor education and physical activity as a way of engaging pupils who may find traditional classroom learning challenging.

You'll support young people with a range of needs, including SEN, SEMH, autism and ADHD, helping to create positive experiences both inside and outside the classroom.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Supporting and delivering outdoor education activities

• Helping to plan safe, engaging and purposeful outdoor sessions

• Supporting sports, physical activities and practical learning

• Using outdoor activities to develop confidence, teamwork, resilience and independence

• Providing 1:1 and small-group support

• Encouraging pupils to participate and try new activities

• Supporting positive behaviour and emotional regulation

• Building strong and trusting relationships with pupils

• Supporting educational visits, trips and enrichment activities

• Working alongside teachers and other professionals to support individual EHCP targets

What We're Looking For

Outdoor education experience is essential for this position.

We're particularly interested in candidates who have worked within outdoor education, outdoor pursuits, activity centres, forest schools or similar environments.

You will need:

• Previous experience in outdoor education - essential

• Experience supporting or leading outdoor activities

• Confidence working outdoors in a range of environments and conditions

• A practical, energetic and hands-on approach

• The ability to motivate and engage children and young people

• A calm, patient and positive approach

• Strong communication and teamwork skills

• An understanding of safety and appropriate risk management during outdoor activities

• Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle - essential

Experience in sports coaching, SEN, SEMH, youth work or mentoring would also be highly beneficial.
