De-escalation Practices Webinar Part 1

04 March 2025 17:00-18:00 Online

When students become upset in class, they often display challenging behaviours that teaching staff may find difficult to manage calmly. If teaching staff feel ‘out of their depth’ and emotions escalate on both sides, the situation can become loud, intimidating, and, for the staff, unprofessional. In this webinar, we explore the strong emotions that often arise during confrontations with students and discuss professional strategies to address ‘angry’ students. The aim is to ensure that staff actions and words do not lead to allegations against them or increase their own stress levels.

Drawing on insights from over 1,200 classroom observations, this two-part webinar covers a range of effective de-escalation practices. Each session includes discussion points for attendees to consider in breakout rooms before the course leader shares and develops examples of good practice. Participants will also receive further reading materials and links to a series of recommended video clips to broaden their understanding of the guidance provided in each webinar session.
