(NEW) Virtual Introduction to the Teaching Assistant Role (Day 2 of 2)

This two-day course is designed to equip new Teaching Assistants (TAs) with minimal experience with essential classroom strategies and approaches. The course provides an in-depth understanding of the role, including expectations, core skills and safeguarding practices, to ensure participants are prepared to support learning effectively.

Course Overview

Day 1

  • T.A. Role Definition
    Explore the responsibilities and expectations of a TA in supporting teachers and pupils in the classroom.

  • Qualities and Skills (inc. Removing Barriers to Learning)
    Learn the essential qualities of a successful TA and strategies to help all pupils overcome challenges to achieve their potential.

  • Expectations & Assertiveness
    Discover how to maintain confidence and authority while fostering positive relationships with pupils and staff.

  • SEND, Jargon & Intervention
    Gain insight into Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), understand key terminology and explore intervention strategies.

  • Supporting and Monitoring Progress
    Understand how to assist in tracking pupils’ academic progress and providing tailored support.

  • Feeding Back to Pupils
    Learn how to deliver effective and constructive feedback to pupils to enhance their learning experience.

  • Current Learning Approaches
    Familiarise yourself with modern teaching methodologies and how TAs can contribute to their success.

  • Differentiation
    Explore strategies for adapting teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of learners.

  • Summary
    A recap of the day’s content, ensuring all participants feel confident in their understanding of the role.

Day 2

Morning: Virtual Safeguarding, including Safer Working Practices (2hrs 30 mins)
This full safeguarding session, updated as of September, includes interactive discussions and Q&A opportunities. It meets the requirement for a three-year generalist safeguarding update. The session also includes Safer Working Practices, focusing on how TAs can ensure safety for themselves and others in the classroom.

Afternoon: Virtual Behaviour Management Workshop (3 hrs)
This session addresses common low-level disruptions and their impact on learning, such as chatting, lateness and distractions. Participants will learn practical techniques for managing classroom behaviour and creating a positive learning environment. These skills aim to reduce stress and improve outcomes for both TAs and pupils.

Important Information
  • Pre-placement Requirement:
    This course is designed to be completed before new TAs with limited experience are placed in schools, in line with compliance guidance.

  • Eligibility:
    Candidates should have some prior experience working with children and Level 2 literacy and numeracy skills.

  • Certification:
    Both days of the course must be completed to gain certification. However, the days may be completed out of sequence.
