Phonics Course

This is a 90-minute course to help you understand the Phonics programmes used in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 settings in England. The course covers:

  • An introduction to systematic synthetic phonics and its alignment with the UK National Curriculum.

  • A comparative overview of key phonics schemes including Read Write Inc.Sounds-Write, and Jolly Phonics—highlighting their structure, teaching approaches, and classroom application.

  • Practical guidance on supporting phonics instruction across EYFS and KS1, including strategies for blending, segmenting, and developing phonemic awareness.

  • Insights into phonics assessment, with a focus on the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check—its format, expectations, and how to prepare pupils effectively.

  • Tools and techniques for tracking progress and adapting teaching to meet diverse learner needs within the phonics framework.

Supporting notes are supplied after the course.

Note! Please READ all of the following carefully BEFORE you book a place.

Course Requirements:

  • You can join the meeting from 10 minutes before the advertised start time.

  • You should be in a private room, on your own, with no distractions (including children) – You will need to have your camera switched on and be CLEARLY VISIBLE for the full duration of the course.

  • Your name must be accurately displayed on screen.

  • You will need a device with a WORKING microphone, a front facing camera and a stable internet connection.

  • Please add a line about your experience working with children in the Zoom ‘chat’ on arrival. Thank you.

If you are unable to FULLY ATTEND please rebook for when you have suitable availability / can fully participate throughout.

Erratic participation resulting from inappropriate compliance with course requirements may result in you be removed from the course / denial of certification as it may undermine the value of the course to yourself and distracts other attendees and the course leader. Thank you for your understanding.

If you book late, your invite will be sent just before the course starts. If you have not received it by 9a.m. on the day of the course, contact charlotte.g@simplyeducation.co.uk. It is unlikely that a duplicate invite can be sent after the course has started.
