Our Virtual De-escalation in Social Emotional Mental Health (SEMH) Schools and Alternative Provisions (VDISSAP) course is invaluable for teaching staff working with pupils who present significant challenges in Special Schools, Alternative Provisions (APs), Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) or challenging mainstream settings. This course is designed to complement and deepen the learning from our other training sessions.
Course Overview
Introduction, Mandate and Baseline Preparedness
We begin by establishing the importance of de-escalation strategies, ensuring participants are prepared to apply these skills effectively in a range of settings.
Module 1: Space
This module explores the many considerations necessary for working in close proximity to SEND pupils, many of whom may have experienced adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Participants will learn practical approaches to create safe and supportive spaces for these learners.Module 2: Communication
Effective communication is key when working with challenging pupils. This module breaks down how to maximise communication skills to benefit all stakeholders, including pupils, colleagues and parents.Module 3: Listening
While many believe they are skilled listeners, working with challenging SEND pupils requires advanced listening techniques. This module focuses on how to use effective listening to benefit both the child and the teacher.Module 4: Taking the Right Approach
This module addresses how to calmly handle difficult situations without physical intervention in SEMH and AP settings. Participants will learn practical strategies to de-escalate conflicts and maintain a safe environment.Module 5: Evaluation
The course concludes with a focus on evaluation, helping participants reflect on and improve their approaches to de-escalation for long-term success.
