12 February 2025 09:30-15:30 Online

This is day one of our two-day Introduction to the Special Education Teaching Assistant Role course which is designed to prepare teaching assistants (TAs) for their first experience working in Special Schools. It provides essential knowledge, skills and practical insights to help TAs navigate the unique challenges of supporting pupils with significant needs.

Course overview

Day 1
The first day focuses on core foundational skills, including:

  • Full Safeguarding training: Covering legal responsibilities, recognising indicators of potential harm and steps to protect children and young people.

  • Safer working practices: Guidance to ensure TAs maintain professional boundaries and work safely in challenging environments.

  • Behaviour management for TAs: Practical approaches to managing and de-escalating difficult behaviours in a calm and effective manner.

Day 2
The second day delves into the day-to-day realities of working in a Special School, featuring:

  • Expectations and best practices: Understanding the roles and responsibilities of TAs, as well as insights into working collaboratively with staff and pupils.

  • Supporting pupils with significant challenges: Strategies for building trust, fostering learning and removing barriers to engagement.

  • Scenario analysis: Participants analyse real-world scenarios, demonstrating their understanding and ability to apply learned strategies effectively.

Important information

Special Schools consistently emphasise the importance of a calm demeanor as a key trait for TAs. This course includes challenging scenarios designed to assess participants' suitability for such roles. TAs who may struggle with emotional regulation might find the course and the role unsuitable.

Certification requirement
Participants must complete both days of training to gain certification. However, the days may be completed in any order.
