Job description

Second in Charge (2iC) - English Department (Senior Leadership Opportunity)

Are you an experienced English educator ready to step into a leadership role and shape the future of our department?

We are seeking a seasoned, strategic-minded professional to join us as Second in Charge (2iC) - English, working in close partnership with the Head of Department. This is a leadership opportunity for someone with proven teaching excellence, strong leadership potential, and a commitment to raising standards and nurturing talent across the department.

What the Role Offers

  • A chance to shape and lead the English curriculum - influencing what students study, how they learn, and how the team delivers it.

  • The opportunity to mentor, support and lead colleagues (both early career and experienced), helping foster a high-achieving, collaborative department culture.

  • A platform to embed and promote high expectations and high-quality outcomes across all key stages.

  • Participation in strategic planning and development - contributing to the long-term direction of the English Department.

  • Access to ongoing professional growth and leadership development.

We're Looking For An Experienced Leader Who Can Demonstrate

  • Consistently excellent classroom teaching and deep subject expertise in English.

  • Leadership qualities: ability to guide, support and develop a team; coach colleagues; and foster collaborative practice.

  • A proven track record of raising pupil achievement, including at GCSE/A-level (or equivalent).

  • Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • A reflective, growth-oriented mindset - ready to lead, learn and drive continuous improvement.

  • Confidence to influence curriculum design, pedagogical strategies, and department-wide initiatives.

Why This Is an Attractive Senior Role

  • You will join a department where collaboration, shared best practice and strong professional relationships are the norm.

  • The environment supports ambitious leaders who want to make a real difference to students' learning and outcomes.

  • We value professional development, staff wellbeing, and work-life balance - offering flexible working options alongside leadership responsibilities.

  • You will have the scope to shape, influence and lead - not just teach.
