PE Teacher
SEMH School - Northwich

Contract: Full-time, initially fixed-term with the strong possibility of becoming a permanent position for the right person.

This SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) specialist provision in Widnes is seeking a dedicated PE Teacher who can make a meaningful impact on young people who need stability, understanding, and high-quality teaching.


About the Role

We are looking for a PE Teacher who can:

  • Deliver engaging, practical, and inclusive PE lessons across KS3-KS4

  • Support pupils with SEMH needs while thriving as a compassionate PE professional

  • Work effectively within a caring, trauma-informed team

  • Maintain high expectations, consistency, and a positive environment

  • Adapt teaching strategies to meet individual needs

  • Model resilience, confidence, and positive behaviour

  • Build strong and trusting relationships with pupils

This role is full-time with the potential to become permanent for a PE Teacher who demonstrates passion, commitment, and strong impact.


Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, deliver, and assess high-quality PE lessons for KS3-KS4 pupils

  • Create a safe, supportive, and structured learning environment

  • Promote physical fitness, wellbeing, teamwork, and positive attitudes

  • Implement behaviour management strategies aligned with SEMH principles

  • Work closely with pastoral and SEN teams to provide individualised support

  • Track progress and produce accurate reports

  • Contribute to wider school life, enrichment activities, and sports programmes

  • Uphold safeguarding responsibilities and follow school policies


Must-Have Skills & Requirements

  • Qualified PE Teacher (QTS/QTLS)

  • Experience teaching KS3-KS4 PE

  • Strong behaviour management and ability to remain calm under pressure

  • Understanding of SEMH needs or willingness to learn

  • Trauma-informed and nurturing approach

  • High levels of resilience, patience, and flexibility

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills


Good-to-Have Skills

  • Experience working in an alternative provision, PRU, or SEMH environment

  • Training in Team Teach / de-escalation / positive behaviour support

  • Ability to plan inclusive physical activities for mixed-ability groups

  • Understanding of therapeutic or wellbeing-informed practices

  • Experience running sports clubs or extracurricular activities


Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Coaching qualifications in specific sports

  • First Aid qualification

  • Experience supporting pupils with additional SEND needs

  • Ability to lead whole-school wellbeing or fitness initiatives

  • Experience delivering outdoor education or off-site PE activities
