Construction Teacher - SEMH School (Peterborough)

Location: Peterborough
Contract Type: Full-time / Permanent (or Temp-to-Perm)

Simply Education is recruiting for a passionate and skilled Construction Teacher to join a specialist SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) provision based in Peterborough. This role is ideal for someone who can inspire, motivate, and prepare young people for future training, apprenticeships, and careers in the construction industry.

Main Purpose of the Role

The Construction Teacher will plan and deliver high-quality, practical, and theoretical lessons that inspire and challenge students. This role is vital in helping learners develop the technical skills, workplace behaviours, and confidence they need to succeed in the construction sector.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

  • Deliver engaging lessons in key construction trades such as brickwork, carpentry, painting & decorating, plumbing, electrics, and health & safety.
  • Embed hands-on, practical learning and relate theory to real-world construction tasks.
  • Prepare students for industry-recognised qualifications (e.g. City & Guilds, CSCS card).
  • Differentiate lessons to meet a range of learning needs, including SEN learners.
  • Promote safe and responsible use of tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Set clear learning targets and track progress through assessments, portfolios, and observations.
  • Plan and deliver lessons in line with curriculum requirements and school policies.
  • Provide feedback through reports and attend parents' evenings.

Wider School Responsibilities

  • Contribute to enrichment and community-based learning activities.
  • Follow safeguarding and health & safety policies at all times.
  • Supervise teaching assistants and contribute to their planning and development.
  • Support students' personal, social, and emotional development.
  • Promote equal opportunities and positive behaviour.
  • Engage with parents, carers, and external partners to support student success.

Industry and Employability Links

  • Build partnerships with local construction firms and training providers.
  • Organise site visits, guest speakers, and employer-led projects.
  • Develop students' employability skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

  • Strong, up-to-date knowledge of construction trades and industry standards.
  • Ability to deliver engaging practical sessions in a workshop environment.
  • Effective classroom and behaviour management.

Staff are supported through a strong commitment to ongoing professional development. Training opportunities are provided to enhance subject expertise, teaching practice, and understanding of SEMH education.

Safeguarding Commitment

This role involves promoting and safeguarding the welfare of all students. The successful applicant will:

  • Maintain a safe workshop environment in line with Health & Safety legislation.
  • Hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS check.
  • Complete mandatory safeguarding training.
  • Report any safeguarding concerns promptly to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
